Collaboration with USGIF to sponsor STEM scholarships

We’ve made no secret of our mission to play a pivotal role in bringing more talent into the GeoIntelligence (GEOINT) and wider space sector. Today that mission took a significant leap in the right direction as we look to sponsor one talented individual through a multi-year degree in collaboration with USGIF.

At the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation’s (USGIF) GEOINT Symposium in April, EVONA was announced as sponsor for a multi-year USGIF scholarship designated to increase diversity in the GEOINT sector.

“Doing something pragmatic to engender the change we need to see in the sector shows how passionate we are about solving the talent crisis that we find ourselves in. We know first-hand how hard it is to find amazing talent to expand a sector which contributes directly to the betterment of human kind. We’re hoping that by making this step, other stakeholders in the industry follow suit and together we can create a bright future for not just those who already work in the space sector, but encourage those who never dreamed it possible that anyone can work in space” Richard Joyce, Co-founder of EVONA

Doing something pragmatic to engender the change we need to see in the sector shows how passionate we are about solving the talent crisis that we find ourselves in. Richard Joyce, EVONA

This announcement came on the final day of USGIF’s annual GEOINT Symposium and reflects a focus throughout the week’s activities related to diversity, inclusion, and belonging in the GEOINT community. The scholarship is designed to support a student who otherwise may be precluded from further education in a STEM subject.

USGIF EVONA Scholarship

The scholarship is currently open to applications but closes on 6th June.

To find out more about how to apply, please keep an eye on this page.

The chosen applicant will be announced in July and EVONA fully intend to make them feel part of the EVONA crew by flying them over to the UK to meet with the team and understand as much about the sector as they can.

Advocating progressive thinking in our industry is essential to its development, which is something we support with great pride. – Tom Kelly, EVONA

Tom Kelly, EVONA Co-Founder explains “With ongoing support pledged by EVONA for the successful applicant throughout their career, we hope to deliver someone with not just the qualifications to succeed, but crucially the soft skills that we see so many of the space community requiring. Advocating progressive thinking in our industry is essential to its development, which is something we support with great pride. We’re excited to make a change in someone’s life; to combine education with our industry insights and connections is a truly unique opportunity. It’s here that EVONA know we can add real value to the USGIF.”

Further to the scholarship announcement EVONA have also begun talks to support USGIF with their Working Group and White Paper initiatives. Occurring every fortnight, EVONA will be offering key advice in the Tradecraft and Professional Development Working Group; a group of representatives, subject matter experts, mentors and professionals who wish to build the community, advance the tradecraft and accelerate innovation of Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT).  Aiming to equip a workforce of professionals with GEOINT training, knowledge, and skills, EVONA provide a different perspective on the hiring challenges of the space and GEOINT sector.

MIKE TOZER, HARDWARE & ELECTRONICS SPECIALIST:

“The internal work culture and office environment at EVONA is relaxed, yet vibrant and dynamic, and is the perfect space to work. Although what I enjoy most is the true flexibility to work from home (or anywhere else) as much as I like in tandem with office working. As the father of a 1-year-old who has recently started nursery, this flexibility around working location and hours really takes the pressure off me and my partner juggling everyday life. In addition to all of this there is huge earning potential and a strong pipeline of new positions across multiple interesting clients to get stuck into.”

ADELE FOX, HEAD OF MARKETING:

“The flexibility to work my job around my three children, the unlimited holiday, and the ability to work how and where I wanted meant that I could finally achieve the ultimate work/life balance that I’d been searching for. What I never expected though was for EVONA to feel so quickly like a second family who trust each other implicitly to achieve incredible things.”

CHLOE JAKEWAYS, SALES. BD &MARKETING SPECIALIST:

“The level of flexibility is unreal; we have complete autonomy, and you can manage your time as to what works for you and work from wherever suits you best, with no KPI’s and competitive commission! I love being part of the EVONA team; it’s collaborative, supportive and we have loads of fun, especially on lunch club, team days out…”

LEWIS HALL, AOCS & GNC SPECIALIST:

“EVONA has a culture where you are trusted, valued and kept engaged with all the tools possible to work to your best, day in day out; whether that’s in the office, in your garden, or in Barbados! Flexibility gets thrown around far too easily, but EVONA can truly say they have a flexible work environment, and the results from everyone here shows that it works! Transparency and honesty are another big thing at EVONA which filters down from founders. It’s made sure we know what’s going on, what’s changing, what commission we are earning (great commission) and what we have to look forward to within the business every week!”

THE SPACE WORKFORCE OF 2030

THE SPACE WORKFORCE OF 2030

2021 and 2022 has seen huge sectors and companies like HP committing to 2030 diversity and inclusion goals and the space sector has now committed to its own pledge for the future of its workforce. Signed at the 37th Space Symposium by 23 executives, the pledge seeks to increase underrepresented genders, races, religions, cultures, and ethnicities.

EVONA’s own research from a recruitment perspective of hiring women in space, highlighted that whilst 38% of our placements into C-level roles were women, across the rest of the industry this was only 17%. Furthermore, only 12% are founders and CEO’s, one of them being Melanie Stricklan who is taking a front seat in the plans for diversity and inclusion in space alongside Steve Isakowitz and Roy Azevedo.

EVONA’s Research on Gender Diversity in the Space sector 2021

We were really grateful to speak to Melanie on our podcast, EVONA Origin Stories, speaking about her journey into the space sector and insights into the need for diversity to progress the industry.

EVONA Origin Stories Episode 5
“WE DON’T NEED PEOPLE THAT THINK LIKE US, RIGHT? WE DON’T NEED PEOPLE THAT COME FROM THE SAME BACKGROUND AS ALL OF US. WHAT WE NEED IS DIVERSITY AROUND THE TABLE THAT ARE ABLE TO RISE TO THE OCCASION AND BRING US TO OUR FULL POTENTIAL AS INDIVIDUALS AND AS A TEAM.”

– MELANIE STRICKLAN

You can listen to the whole podcast on our Spotify Channel here.

WHAT WILL THE PLEDGE DO?

The space workforce 2030 pledge commits those that have signed to reporting data on diversity and inclusion annually and working with universities to grow the numbers of diverse and underrepresented students in technical degrees that are crucial in the industry.

The specific goals Include:

  • Substantially boost the number of women and employees from underrepresented groups in our collective technical workforce
  • Significantly escalate the number of women and employees from underrepresented groups who hold senior leadership positions in our collective technical workforce
  • Work with universities to increase the percentages of women and students from underrepresented groups receiving aerospace engineering degrees to levels     commensurate with overall engineering programs
  • Sponsor K-12 programs that collectively reach over 5,000,000 underrepresented students annually

The 24 executives also agreed to:

  • Aggregate the numbers on the first two bullet points for annual reporting and hold themselves accountable by annually reviewing the progress against these goals
  • Allow group-level results to be shared at the annual Space Foundation’s Space Symposium, while highlighting achievements and best practices to promote     shared success
  • Meet twice a year at the working level to exchange best practices on strengthening diversity recruitment, STEM education outreach and representation at leadership levels
  • Seek like-minded leaders and organizations to join this effort

The Leaders and relative companies that have agreed to the Space Workforce 2030 pledge are:

  • Roy Azevedo, President Raytheon Intelligence & Space
  • Payam Banazadeh, CEO at Capella Space
  • Peter Beck, CEO at Rocket Lab
  • Tory Bruno, CEO at United Launch Alliance
  • Jim Chilton, Senior VP of Space & Launch at Boeing
  • Michael Colglazier, CEO at Virgin Galactic
  • Tim Ellis, CEO at Relativity Space
  • John Gedmark, CEO at Astranis Space Technologies
  • Steve Isakowitz, CEO at The Aerospace Corporation
  • Larry James, Acting Director at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
  • Daniel Jablonsky, CEO at Maxar Technologies
  • Robert Lightfoot, EVP of Lockheed Martin Space
  • Dave Kaufman, President at Ball Aerospace
  • Chris Kemp, CEO at Astra
  • Will Marshall, CEO at Planet
  • Dan Piemont, President at ABL Space Systems
  • Peter Platzer, CEO at Spire Global
  • Melanie Stricklan, CEO at Slingshot Aerospace
  • John Serafini, CEO at HawkEye 360
  • Amela Wilson, CEO at Nanoracks
  • Tom Wilson, President Space Systems at Northrop Grumman

THE PROBLEM STARTS WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

Collectively tackling the issues now will make a difference for future generations, however, it’s understood that the problem begins before workers even enter the sector. The pledge not only recognises gender and race as a diversity and inclusion issue but also students graduating and hoping to enter the workforce, hence the two bullet points focusing on universities and K-12 programmes.

Referring back to our research on women in space, in Engineering alone it’s noted that only 31% of engineer graduates in 2020 were women with only 24% of individuals in an engineering profession as of last year identifying as female, decreasing even further for those entering into a career in space.

Over the past few years EVONA have also recognised the issue surrounding students, facilitating education workshops to inspire them to join the space sector through our space spectra webinars. Recently we contacted local STEM students to gather a further understanding of the barriers STEM students have when considering a career in space.

The main issues noted were that most STEM subjects don’t have space content as part of their syllabus, many have a lack of information about the sector and believe their skills are not relevant.

Copyright of D.Doran (2022) – work cannot be replicated

‍Previously UKSEDS have noted that “students need to be made aware of potential career paths they can work towards… encouraging them to consider a career they wouldn’t have known about otherwise, fostering interest in particular subjects, making it more likely for them to invest time in developing skills needed within the sector.”

These issues present a demand for the key points of the pledge and could make a real difference to the future of the space workforce for young people, solving diversity and inclusion issues from the bottom up.

INSIGHTS FROM A RECRUITMENT PERSPECTIVE

Workplace diversity is important in all sectors and studies show that currently 57% of recruiters have strategies to attract diverse candidates. Achieving greater diversity has a multitude of benefits, as including a range of perspectives improves problem solving, enhances innovation and creativity, reduced employee turnover and improved hiring results to name a few. Not only does it have internal benefits, companies with higher levels of diversity and inclusion are proven to outperform their competitors by 35%.

Whilst the issue as a whole is complicated, not all solutions have to be. There are a number of simple and creative ways to champion this cause within your recruitment strategies!

Ways to improve Diversity:

· Recruitment teams need to actively strategize how to advertise jobs in order to maximise the audience they appeal to, specifically those of underrepresented groups.

· Family friendly policies like part-time, flexible working, parental leave and onsite nurseries are a great way to indicate the company is inclusive for those with children

· Championing for causes than resonate with underrepresented groups with partnerships/ donations/ fundraising demonstrates the inclusive culture and diversity ethos.

· Using anonymous profiling or software like PitchMe to remove bias from recruitment practices and only hire those with the right requirements for the role

· Belonging to an advisory group to assist with implementing company strategies, policies, and initiatives.

· Offering internships or mentoring for underrepresented groups

· Showing people from underrepresented groups in leadership positions and on the boards

EVONA Purpose

EVONA PURPOSE – WE’RE SO MUCH MORE THAN A RECRUITMENT COMPANY

‍EVONA is a young, unique, dynamic company leading the way in the global space sector. We work with some of the most innovative companies on the globe (and off it!) in a market estimated to be worth $3 Trillion, but we’re also so much more than that. Behind all of this, we are a team of individuals who are passionate about our jobs and the company we work for. We don’t have the dreaded Sunday night anxiety many recruiters face, and we genuinely look forward to coming to work and contributing towards the rapidly growing space sector.

Apart from the unlimited remote working, zero KPI’s and managing your own working hours, we believe one of the (many) reasons our crew love working here is because we encourage and support them to be able to have any additional ‘purpose’ outside of their everyday recruitment role. Although we love our job and placing brilliant people into amazing companies is at the forefront of what we do, we know giving the option of an additional purpose boosts moral, overall wellbeing and ultimately job satisfaction.

This ‘purpose’ can be anything our team feel passionate about, and we do this because we believe in the evolution of knowledge and in the progression of our people – which is exactly where our name stems from: EVO – to evolve, ONA – people. Here are just a few examples….

Adele Fox – Head of Marketing and Sustainability Advocate

Adele Fox
‘We work with very inspirational earth observation organisations every day and it’s impossible to ignore what the data is telling us about climate change and deforestation. Last year alone was the worst year on record for deforestation of the Amazon rainforest and we need to play a small part in helping to rectify this issue. As such, EVONA plant 2 trees per employee every single month to offset the carbon we generate. To date we have planted nearly 1000 tress in our global EVONA forest; over 20% of them in the Amazon basin.’

Glen Gill – Space Business Partner and Social Issues Champion

Glen Gill

‘I like to champion for CSR at EVONA, as I think it is important to create a positive impact in relation to local social and economic issues. EVONA have organised a variety of activities; over Christmas we collected food and clothing for the homeless and later this year we will be running the Bristol Half Marathon to raise money for Young Minds. As well as raising awareness of important issues, the activities we organise bring the team together and give us a group objective, which naturally means we work more collaboratively on a daily basis.’

Alice Grant – Senior Technical Recruitment Consultant and Content Marketing Executive

Alice Grant

‘EVONA’s ethos to believe in the evolution in their people was shown to be when they offered me the chance to work a hybrid-role and combine recruitment with my other passion for Content Marketing! I studied English with Writing at University and I really enjoy creating content. I love having the chance to get creative and it allows me to break up my day with different tasks and learn new skills, which I wouldn’t have gained in a sole recruitment role. Lots of recruitment companies promise a lot of things before you join, but EVONA really do stick to their word.’

Emma Jackson – Technical Recruitment Consultant and Stem Volunteer in schools

Emma Jackson
‘As part of the onboarding with EVONA, every employee becomes an ambassador of STEM Learning UK to be able to connect with young people, inspiring them to become the next generation of STEM professionals. I have personally chosen to get involved with, and been accepted onto the ‘Curious Stories for Curious Children’ reading programme. It is designed to help develop both English language skills and the STEM identity of primary-aged children by reading a story in schools related to your industry. I am SO passionate about getting involved in this programme, because if you don’t know about the opportunities out there for yourself, how can you ever make them a reality?’

Chloe Jakeways – Principal Technical Recruitment Consultant and Podcast host

Chloe Jakeways
‘I do the EVONA Origin podcast because I want to help lift the curtain on the space sector and inspire listeners to follow their passion.  Talking to individuals who have made their mark within the space sector and understanding how their journeys started, their ambitions, achievements and failures and their pathway to success is truly inspiring.  It’s amazing to be involved with something different and I hope it inspires people to follow their dreams, the global space industry is booming and there are so many different career paths, it’s not just for rocket scientist and astronauts, it’s much more accessible than that.’

Jake Heal – Senior Recruitment Consultant – AKA ‘King of Fun’

Jake Heal

‘Socialising as a team is important. It brings us together and gives us a chance to talk about more than just work. I organise a night out every month for the whole team like bowling, clay pigeon shooting, go-karting, or something just as simple as a bite to eat and a few drinks. It keeps the team motivated and ultimately makes EVONA a better place to work”

Sam Lewis and Joe Duff, Recruitment Specialists and Thought Leaders

Joe Duff (Left) and Sam Lewis (Right)

‘Everyone is fascinated by the space sector but when joining EVONA not many people have a deep understanding of the technologies and nuances within it. What better way to upskill our knowledge than from speaking to, and learning from industry experts? I love the space sector and building my knowledge base is key to me improving the service to my clients, candidates and to helping guide those looking to take their first step into the sector.’ (Sam)

When it comes to employee benefits, we don’t have a one size fits all approach. After 6 month’s service, and with the help our Financial Advisor, our crew choose their own benefits. If you join us, you can decide what works for you, your life, and your PURPOSE. Please reach out to find out more.

*If you’re not sure what your purpose is just yet, you can join and work that out along the way. Most of the crew have found their ‘purpose’ after already starting and there is no expectation or pressure to find an additional purpose outside your everyday role, we offer a relaxed culture with full autonomy to work how you work best.*

The next step in global expansion for EVONA

THIS WEEK, EVONA OFFICIALLY BECAME INCORPORATED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

This brings us one step closer to establishing a premises in America to better serve our transatlantic clients and candidates. Looking to physically land on the East coast in 2022, we’re currently on the look out for premises. This next phase of our evolution is so exciting and comes just before we celebrate 4 years at EVONA.

Having reported 600% year-on-year revenue growth and more than doubled in size in the last year, EVONA is now incredibly well placed to open up more physical locations around the world with plans in the year to open a second UK location in Manchester.

EVONA announce incorporation in the the US

Co-Founder Richard Joyce said: “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved at EVONA from our Bristol hub in the UK. Our plan has always been to expand worldwide as we continue to support the global space economy and this is an important step in making that happen. Coupled with our domestic expansion plans to open a second location in Manchester this year, as well as future plans for more locations in strategic global locations, it’s a very exciting time for the company!”

You can keep up to date with our growth and expansion plans on LinkedIn and Instagram.

International Women’s Day 2022 – #BreakTheBias

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality and this international women’s day we are being asked to #BreakTheBias!

It’s been identified many times that the space sector lacks a level of diversity with only 29% of the space workforce identifying as female, and only 16% of senior positions being held by women in the industry.

Last year, we took a look at our own data of women in the Space sector and concluded that there is a systemic issue with education. Women make up only 35% of graduates from STEM programmes Worldwide according to a UN report. The research all points to a lack of mentors and female leaders in the space sector so this article sets out some incredible resources for women looking to pursue a STEM or Space career.

“Before men and women, we are human beings. That is common sense. If you want to do something, go for it!” Chiaki Mukai – First Japanese woman in space

Five small ways you can help change the narrative

  • Raise awareness among children, educators and parents to reject gender bias – anyone can work in the space sector.
  • Challenge outdated perceptions.
  • Listen to women’s expertise and have confidence in their research.
  • Mentor women and girls in science and technology, encourage them to aim high.
  • Celebrate the historical achievements of women in the space sector.
  • Share stories of women at the forefront of the space industry.

In recent episodes of our podcast, Origin Stories, we gained insight from three fantastic women at the forefront of the industry:

Mel Stricklan  The founder of Slingshot Aerospace and One of America’s top 100 Female Founders

“We don’t need people that think like us, right? We don’t need people that come from the same background as all of us. We need that diversity around the table, and we need people that are able to rise to the occasion and bring us to our full potential as individuals and as a team.”

Megan Kane – A dream to become a farmer but not on earth, working on a number of NASA projects she shares her mission to get to Mars

“I bet you didn’t know that video game experience comes in really handy when going into the space sector – it’s a valuable skill set”

Listen Here

Carol Craig – One of the first women to lead a space business to go public and one of the first women to fly combat in the US Navy before turning into an inspirational ‘astropreneur’

“Initiative will set you apart in the space sector. You don’t have to have a college degree to get you in the door – you just need other key attributes”

Space is for Everyone

SPACE ISN’T JUST FOR ASTRONAUTS –IT’S FOR EVERYBODY.

“Space is for everybody. It’s not just for a few people in science or maths, or for a select group of astronauts. That’s our new frontier out there, and it’s everybody’s business to know about space.”

– Christa McAuliffe.

One of the most common misconceptions about the space industry is that it is just for astronauts or the mega-rich, and that it isn’t accessible to everyone. With human spaceflight becoming more common, it’s easy to understand why people think this way. Here at EVONA, we are keen to show people that the space sector is incredibly exciting and getting involved hereon earth is much easier than you think. In fact, many of your favourite brands and products reaping the rewards of this ever-growing industry daily.  Here are just a few of our favourite examples of unexpected industries getting involved…

Thanks to GIS (or Geographic Information Systems), apps such as Deliveroo, Starbucks and Uber have utilised data from space to become some of the most popular app’s all over the world. You can learn more about GIS and its many benefits from our previous blog here.

Baby food – you wouldn’t automatically think that Space and baby food would be in the same sentence. However, while developing life support for Mars missions, NASA-funded researchers discovered a natural source for an omega-3 fatty acid previously found primarily in breastmilk that plays a key role in infant development. The ingredient has since been added to more than 90 percent of infant formula on the market and is helping babies all over the world develop healthy brains, eyes, and hearts through the enriched formula.

Wine – yes, wine. A recent study, where12 bottles of Bordeaux wine were shipped to the space station on a Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo spacecraft in November 2019. This wasn’t for the astronauts to drink, but to study how microgravity AKA weightlessness, affects wine as it ages. The wine remained in a sealed canister at the orbiting laboratory for 438 days and 19 hours before returning to earth on a spacecraft for the all important taste test, which showed that the wine “was really maybe one to two or even three years further evolved than you would expect from the one that had remained on Earth,” wine writer Jane Anson, who participated in the taste test, told reporters in a press conference early last year.

Cosmetics – an industry which sways heavily towards women, as opposed to 29% of the space workforce. We are constantly trying to close the gender gap within the Space sector, and we hope that this shows that it really is for everyone. Estee Lauder, one of the world’s favourite cosmetics giants, flew one of their most-loved beauty serums to space and become the first beauty brand in the world to do so for an out of this world (quite literally) marketing campaign and also conduct sustainability research.

We are thrilled to reinforce our leadership once again as the first beauty brand to go into space,” said Stéphane de La Faverie, group president of The Estée Lauder Companies and global brand president of Estée Lauder, in the company’s statement. “NASA is at the forefront of space exploration, and as a leader in skincare innovation, Estée Lauder is proud to support the incredible work NASA is doing to promote a space economy by being the second-ever commercial product to launch.”

….and many more!

We hope this shows you that space truly is for everyone and benefits a wide range of different industries, with more adding to the growing list every day. We are regularly placing candidates with no prior experience within the Space sector, so please do not be afraid to explore this sector if you haven’t considered it before – everybody starts somewhere.
