Announcing our Partnership with Space Talent

EVONA are pleased to announce our partnership with Space Talent, the online portal for careers in the space industry and its broader ecosystem.

A subsidiary of Space Capital – the early-stage venture capital firm focused on the Space economy – Space Talent aims to help address the current surge in demand for space employees with the help of specialist space recruitment and headhunting firm, EVONA.

The Space Sector is estimated to be worth $3 trillion by 2040.

‍This growth will rely on attracting individuals with transferable skills from outside the sector, nurturing the talent within and demystifying the sector to appeal to the future space workforce of tomorrow. Platforms like Space Talent along with partners like EVONA have the objective to work together to connect these dots and facilitate the sustainable fast-paced growth of the sector.

“The current pace of innovation and incoming investor interest indicates that the space economy will be one of the fastest-growing sectors over the next decade, which will require an increasingly diverse workforce to unlock the value of these space technology stacks.”  – Chad Anderson, managing partner of Space Capital.

Announcing the launch of the platform yesterday, Space Capital introduced Space Talent as a career hub matching credible employers with top talent while providing insights into an ecosystem with an ever-expanding range of opportunities. Key features of the platform include: Job Board; Job-Seeker Resources; Start-Up Tools including access to funding to help entrepreneurs build their own ideas and ‘Open Pitch’ helping founders experiment, build, and finance new businesses by providing resources and the opportunity to receive up to $1.5M in funding from Space Capital and its affiliates.

Speaking about the partnership with EVONA, Justus Kilian, Principal at Space Capital, Founder at Space Talent said:

“EVONA has been an incredibly valuable partner in our own recruiting needs as well as supporting numerous companies through Space Talent. They’ve demonstrated the ability to find great talent at all layers of the space technology stack and fill a wide variety of business and technical roles.”

Tom Kelly Co-Founder of EVONA added:

“With the ever increasing need for high quality candidates to fuel growth of the sector, more and more companies are turning to the likes of EVONA to fill hard-to-recruit-for positions. We’ve been working with Space Talent since 2019 and are delighted to be announced as their formal recruitment partner to help support their mission and assist space corporations of all sizes find the talented workforce they need, quickly and efficiently.”

As STEM ambassadors with strong connections to universities and colleges, EVONA have recently started a webinar series entitled Space Spectra aimed at students and professionals looking to take their next step into the sector. The Space Talent platform supports this effort with details of internships and other opportunities for students and recent graduates.

Shooting for Mars

For decades we’ve looked upon the Red Planet as a viable alternative to host life, but we still know relatively little about what form that ‘life’ might take. This month, that changes as we edge that little bit closer to the first crewed mission to Mars.

Between July and August 2020, Earth and Mars align to create an ideal window for Mars mission launches that reduce costs and increase the chances of success. Understandably then, three scheduled launches to Mars will take place this month: NASA’s Perseverance rover is scheduled for launch on 30th July, China’s Tianwen-1 on 23rd – but before that, all eyes are on the new kids on the block, UAE’s Emirates Mars Mission.

Due to launch on the 14th July 2020, the Japanese weather had other ideas and has delayed launch until Monday 20th July at 1.43am UAE time (Sun 19/7 22:43 BST).

At 22:43 BST Sunday 19th July the UAE launch into space exploration with their first interplanetary mission as The Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) takes flight with the Hope Probe; its task – to provide the first ever complete picture of the Martian atmosphere. Catch the launch live here.

Using three scientific instruments on board of the spacecraft, the EMM will provide a better understanding of circulation and weather in the lower, middle and upper layers of the Martian atmosphere. The $200 million mission is due to orbit Mars for a full martian year, or 687 days, and will be sharing the data amongst 200 research institutions, including NASA, for free.

If you weren’t already aware of the UAE’s ambitious space plans, we believe you soon will be. Hot on the heels of their Astronaut Programme, which saw the launch of their first Emirati Astronaut to the ISS in September last year, this post-oil economic diversification is about to put UAE on the space map in a big way. We caught up with Talal M. Al Kaissi, Advisor on Strategic Projects at the UAE Space Agency to get his thoughts on this momentous occasion.

Emirates Mars Mission Hope Mission badge

“It’s really surreal to be this close to the historic launch of our spacecraft.” he explains. “Our Emirates Mars Mission “Hope” probe is the culmination of 6 years of very hard work by a dedicated, professional team of young engineers who have helped us prove that nothing is impossible.”

The UAE’s collaborative mission effort and commitment to data sharing has earned them much admiration. Launching from Tanegashima Space Centre Japan and sourcing help from University of Colorado Boulder, this mission is testament to what can be achieved thanks to a growing commercialisation of the sector, a collaborative approach to space exploration and a dedication to developing expertise in space science and technologies.

As Talal M. Al Kaissi explains “This mission is already a success and has accomplished the goals the government had set in building human capital, acquiring knowledge, forging strong partnerships, and providing the foundation to a space economy and ecosystem in the country. The science objectives will be a bonus, and the STEM education encouraged by this program as well as the inspiration value it induced will continue for years to come.”

The UAE planned to build the Hope probe six years ago, at the same time setting up the Middle East’s first space research centre and announcing the ‘Arab Space Pioneers’ programme. Overseen by the UAE Space Agency, the programme equips talent with the skills and expertise required to expand career prospects in the growing space sector to actively contribute to the global space community. The programme highlights the importance of investing in the multi-faceted space technology as a major driver of the future knowledge-based economy. This is one space mission that has taught us the economic value of investment into STEM space programmes in order to advance the capabilities of the sector and address the future workforce challenges.

Hope is scheduled to reach Mars in February 2021, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the United Arab Emirates’ formation – that’s a pretty good birthday celebration if you ask us.

They have delivered top quality candidates to us and helped us fill many hard to fill speciality roles. They are very communicative and responsive as well. While I find it to be a little strange they are in the UK doing US recruiting, I am glad they are because they have helped us find some great talent! We love working with EVONA. Thanks for being great!” – Jessica Maddin, Human Resource Generalist – Honeybee Robotics

Jessica Maddin testimonial for Evona

“Best in class recruitment experience using Evona as a supplier. They have been proactively prepared throughout our process rather than passive reaction you get from other firms in this industry. Always upfront, honest, and go well above and beyond with all requests and projects. Professional yet humanized approach to recruitment and onboarding and aftercare has been second to none. Keep up the good work.” – Global data and analytics partner

“Very good. It was a pleasure to work with EVONA. What really impressed us is the quality of candidates, both in terms of technical prowess and cultural fit that were presented to us. The hires we did with EVONA have become integral members of the management, product and technical teams at Mobius Labs.”Appu Shaji, CEO and Chief Scientist – Mobius Labs

Working with recruiters can be a total crapshoot. They can be pushy, money-first minded, and hard to get a hold of when you really need them. EVONA has been the exact opposite! Kat and Ryan are some of the most lovely folks to work with and our experience with them has been wonderful and successful. They are highly motivated to find the right fit, even when it takes a long time. They are kind-hearted and care about taking the time to fully communicate, both with our company and the candidates. High level of professionalism and compassion all around. Thanks EVONA!” Allie St. Amand, Head of Community – Capella Space

“EVONA Worked extremely hard to hammer out an agreement that accommodated York’s budget — suggested flexible & innovative pricing schemes that provided maximum flexibility to York leadership. They used a really impressive group of recruiters to fully canvas all of York’s 18+ hiring needs; demonstrated speed, efficiency, and quality – combined with impeccable organization skills. York was so impressed with EVONA’s responsiveness and quality of support that we happily committed to an agreement that established Evona as York’s exclusive recruiting agency, indefinitely. Exceptionally professional, thorough, well-organized, and impressive. Every recruiter at EVONA has been an absolute joy to work with.” –Director – York Space Systems

Allie St. Amand Testimonial for Evona

EVONA has a real knack for sourcing top talent for work in the space industry. Certainly, far more than most, they understand the companies and idiosyncrasies of the industry. That’s their niche. But more importantly, they are attentive to our unique skill and experience requirements with a honed ability to really zero in on only the right candidates. They don’t waste our time with piles of resumes or candidates. Despite being an ocean away, EVONA behaves as though they are the 24×7 sourcing shop next door. Their neon light is always on, day or night. I have found myself learning to trust EVONA with the future of our team, which has a huge impact on the future of our business.” –COO – Kythera & RKF Engineering

“As a small company experiencing rapid growth in the space industry, Astrobotic has had a need to quickly fill positions that require specialized experience and skill sets. From a recruiting standpoint, we are at a disadvantage to some of our competitors, because we are located in an atypical city for the industry and we are unable to offer compensation packages on par with larger companies. We have looked to recruiting agencies to assist our effort when we’re struggling to find qualified candidates in our direct applicant pool.

Among the agencies we’ve partnered with, EVONA has outperformed in several respects. First, their recruiters pay close attention to our requirements and feedback, and so are more likely to refer candidates that meet our specific needs. Second, they advocate strongly for our company and have helped to win candidates who were hesitant to make a career change. And third, their service fees are bespoke unlike most agencies, which makes us inclined to partner with them before others. Quality, results, and value are an attractive combination in a recruiting agency.

Beyond those practical considerations, we have found the team at EVONA to be a pleasure to work with. Tom and Ryan have been friendly and prompt in their communication; they have been understanding of our business needs and challenges; and they have leveraged their team effectively to assist us. We will no doubt continue to look to them for support in the future.”Head of Recruitment – Astrobotic

“EVONA quickly developed a deep understanding for the challenges of our business. We were amazed by their ability to convert that knowledge into a strong recruiting funnel that repeatably produces very high quality candidates. The first hire we did with EVONA has already become an invaluable member of our team here at BLIQ.”Co-Founder – BLIQ

“EVONA took time to understand our business needs and worked hard to ensure a good fit of candidates. Good communications throughout the process and follow up.”Chief Engineer – LEO Constellation Company

“EVONA has excelled in doing the hard work for us in the recruiting process. It would usually take us months to work through applications to job postings, and Evona provides a concise list of better-quality candidates in weeks or less, and with personalized briefings on each one. It’s great to have EVONA on our side in this competitive labour market.” CEO – Helios

“EVONA’s strength lies in identifying suitable candidates which match both the technical need but also the ethos of the company. This reduces the amount of interviews and leads to hires which directly feel comfortable within the team and working environment.”Lift Me Off

“The best so far!”

I highly recommend EVONA .Their team is very detailed in finding the most qualified and experienced candidates that we are wanting to employ. Evona’s communication during the process is second to none. They are very professional and work with you throughout the hiring process.”HR – Vaya Space

COVID impacts on space talent and our tips for success

COVID-19 has altered the landscape for organisations globally and affected the workforce in a number of different ways. Lockdown restrictions have meant staff have been working from home; redundancies have ensued; candidates previously open to the opportunity of a new career have hunkered down in symmetry with many of their employing organisations and those that have made the leap to a new career have had to interview and onboard remotely.

Positively however, EVONA can report the future for the sector is far from grim.

Companies are hiring, new career opportunities are available and thanks to technological adoption, working, onboarding and interviewing remotely is not only successful, but is likely to become standard practice.

Job-seeking during COVID-19

Job-seeker tips during COVID-19.

The reported findings of Space Talent’s COVID assessment of May 2020 indicates there has been a 60% reduction in job seekers from Jan to date. At EVONA we’ve certainly seen a shift in candidate mindset with a general reluctance to leave a current position or pursue an opening in the market.

Our response to this has been a simple one:the number of redundancies in the sector will naturally create an influx of very high quality candidates into the market and increase the competition for roles. We urge those offered a position that meets requirements to make the move. Waiting is likely to delay career goals, restrict future movements and tie the candidate to their current role longer than anticipated.

Candidate tips for success

Take the job: As we’ve just mentioned, waiting to take a role or pursue a new position will only delay your career goals. After COVID-19 the competition for positions will increase. Accepting offered positions will enhance your career potential.

Prepare for interviews: Perhaps the largest change for the workforce has been the need to get to grips with remote interactions, and the most noticeable concern amongst the job seekers: the video interview.

Preparing for a video interview isn’t necessarily any different from meeting with the employer in person; in fact, it can work to your advantage.  We encourage anyone to prepare for an interview thoroughly by researching the company and have notes on hand.

You should present yourself in the same way you would a personal interview, considering body language and dress. Test your systems before dialling in, but remain calm if the worst does happen; we’ve all had a bad tech day.

Utilise technology to work from home: Working for home and onboarding into a new organisation is absolutely possible, even during lockdown. At EVONA we have hired four people during the pandemic, all onboarding and becoming part of the team utilising video conferencing, instant messenger services and email.

You can read more on our top tools to streamline working from home in our article here.

Recruiting during COVID-19

Now Hiring – Recruiting staff during COVID-19

It was certainly true in February that for some of the companies we work with, COVID-19 resulted in slower contracting and was expected to have a mixed impact on revenue targets. This uncertainty seemed somewhat reflected in Space Talent’s recent COVID assessment which reported~30% fall in available jobs from March – May (though the rate is slowing); and certainly in late February, we were seeing clients withdraw jobs feeling it ‘wasn’t the time to hire’.

Happily however, to us, this feeling seemed relatively short-lived and others companies we work with have been all too ready to continue with the recruiting effort. 80% of the business EVONA conducts is within the United States and the goal here is clear: American companies must remain the world leaders in space technology.

It is perhaps this mission that has meant despite the feelings of early spring, we find ourselves in a very different environment currently. We’ve just reported the best ever month in our trading history for May 2020, with a steady monthly increase from March.

Whilst we believe our specialist recruitment practices – frequently handling remote hiring situations coupled with the pace and quality of candidate placements – are certainly a factor in our recruitment success despite the pandemic, there is also indication that for some companies, it’s business as usual; and that extends to recruiting new assets into the company.

Space Talent’s report noted that 16.7% of businesses surveyed expected to slightly or moderately increase the headcount within their organisation.

Perhaps this is down to space companies experiencing elevated risk to their survival with funds tied to deliverables and completion of contracts. With the space workforce highly specalised, companies are under pressure to deliver on deadlines and strategically pulling back on the recruiting effort will hamper the delivery of those contracts. We’ve heard from our clients that customer confidence in their ability to deliver on projects is strongly tied to the quality of their workforce. Quality hires have directly resulted in the extension of contracts and the perceived ability of the organisation. With a 60% reduction in the number of job seekers, reaching candidates is a new challenge and quality and pace of hire is crucial.

It certainly feels to us that hiring in key areas of the industry hasn’t slowed at all, in fact, quite the opposite. If this quick turn around is at all indicative of the way in which the sector will bounce back we believe it will be business as usual soon.

Hiring company tips for success

Hire now: Despite initial trepidation, companies looking to hire to reach objectives prior to the outbreak haven’t stopped. It is our view that it will be these companies that will be able to pick up where they left off and make advances on the market whilst others halting recruitment may stagnate. Offering suitable candidates an offer in principle will secure the talent, enable time to familiarise them with organisational procedures and provide security for the candidate.

Utilise technology: Interviewing through video conferencing has never been more necessary. Adopting this method has always shown innovation; it reduces the necessity to travel, allows instant connections, frees up tight schedules of hiring managers, streamlines the recruiting effort, is cost effective and crucially, can currently keep us all safe at the moment whilst not hampering growth.

Embrace remote working: Flexible working conditions are not only generating a happier, more productive workforce, it’s a valuable incentive employers are using to attract new applicants. Many of the job seekers we speak to are searching for greater work-life balance and broader choices in terms of where and how they work. A recent study revealed that allowing employees the flexibility to work from home also increased loyalty. The space sector workforce is highly skilled and not easily reconstituted; it takes considerable time and effort to reconstruct the talent required to restore full operational capabilities. Considering remote-working will retain the skilled employees within an organisation.

The requirement to be able to work from home was on the rise before COVID-19; it’ll be even more popular now and employers need to tool up to be able to satisfy this requirement.

What will the future bring?

From what EVONA has reported, the future of the space sector is certainly secure – if that were ever in doubt. Two years ago the Bank of America predicted that the sector would be worth 2.7 trillion in 20 years time and there’s no reason to question that prediction now. After all, despite a global pandemic, we’ve just experienced the first crewed mission to the ISS from US soil for 11 years; a mission made possible by the increased commercialisation of the sector. Surely that’s as good an indication as any of the resilience of the space industry.

A Holistic View of Space Recruiting (Part 2 of 2)

This article is a continuation of Part I: Why Space Sector Recruiting is More Than Recruiting. If you haven’t yet read Part I, we suggest that you do so now. At EVONA, we embrace a holistic model of recruitment.  When considering the space sector as a whole, we see the function of recruitment as similar to the function of the circulatory system within an organism: it enables and manages the flow of vital resources through the system.

We view recruitment as a vital organ of the space sector itself, existing in a symbiotic relationship with the entire industry. Just as the circulatory system delivers life-giving blood to all the different organs of the body, a recruitment system delivers the “life-blood” of innovation and productive economic activity—talented people—to all the different sub-sectors of the space industry.

Therefore, a healthy, functioning space sector requires a recruitment infrastructure that is designed to support the needs of the sector as a whole, in addition to the needs of individual job-seekers and hiring companies.

The Roles and Responsibilities of Space Sector Recruiters

Garden of commerce

This holistic conception of recruiting fundamentally changes how one views the roles and responsibilities of space sector recruiters.

The more conventional approach focuses on recruitment as a relationship between individual job candidates and individual hiring companies. In this model, recruiting  is a service that benefits three parties—candidates, hiring companies, and the recruiting agency itself.

This conventional model may be acceptable for recruiting professional athletes, but it is not acceptable within today’s space sector, where there is a great deal more at stake.

The holistic conception of recruiting includes all of these conventional elements, but adds to it consideration of the impacts of recruitment activities on the vitality and direction of the space sector as a whole—and on the array of stakeholders who may be impacted by activities originating within the sector.

The reasons for this broader perspective are clear. Think of military recruiting in a time of war. Or recruiting into public health service at a time of global pandemic. In these contexts, it would be perverse to imagine the role of the recruiter solely in terms of earning a paycheck for signing up recruits and matching candidates to open positions, without considering the broader context that motivates the need for recruitment in the first place.

With space sector development we can’t identify a singular goal that animates the whole enterprise, like winning a war or stopping the spread of a disease. We’re talking about open-ended, market-driven commercial activities, where we want and expect a thousand flowers to bloom.

But we understand that this garden of commerce will be an incubator of new ideas and technologies, some of which are destined to have far-reaching impacts. Developments within the space sector will create an array of possible futures that would not have existed otherwise. Whether we have human colonies on Mars within thirty years will depend on what happens within the space sector today.

Space Sector Recruiting is More Than Recruiting

With this bigger picture and longer view in mind, you can see why at Evona we believe that space sector recruiting is more than recruiting.

It’s recruiting with a mission: to attract and prepare the most capable people for meaningful and fulfilling careers in the space sector; to help them find opportunities with companies that are best suited to their goals and talents; and to provide a network of human resource services that support the productive work of the space sector.

Fulfilling this mission will take us beyond the conventional match-making role of recruiters. For example, to attract and prepare the most capable people for work in the space sector, we can’t wait for them to show up at our door. We must seed the pool of candidates by providing opportunities to attract, educate and inspire talent at all ages and stages of life, from young students to late-career professionals.

Thus, one of our aims as a space sector recruitment agency is to create awareness and inspiration throughout the education system and among the public. Students of all levels need to be aware of current and future initiatives within the space sector, and what skills and training are most useful and in demand. And they need to be exposed to the great variety of forms that a career in space can take, to know that it’s not all rockets and astronauts.

In this role we are functioning more as ambassadors than recruiters for the space sector. But this is exactly what we mean when we say that space sector recruiting is more than recruiting.

Putting it all together

Talented and motivated workers are essential to any business venture. To be successful in the space industry, a company must attract the most prepared and capable candidates. Good recruiters help to identify and prepare candidates for success within the right fields and the right companies. These services save companies time, effort and resources that they can then allocate to innovation and productive work.

The end result is not just well-placed candidates; it’s well-equipped companies that are better able to make a productive contribution to the space sector—and, by extension, a positive impact on the human experience.

At Evona we see our role as space sector recruiters within this broader frame. We understand that we have a role to play in shaping the story that humanity is writing for itself.

It is not our role to dictate how that story should be written. But we care deeply about how it unfolds, and we view it as our responsibility to have an eye on the bigger picture and the longer view, as we serve the recruiting needs of our clients.

Why Space Sector Recruiting is More Than Recruiting (Part 1 of 2)

July 20, 2019, marked the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon. On that date in 1969, over 500 million viewers worldwide were glued to their television screens as the crew of Apollo 11 made history.

Sadly, in the decades following the Moon landing, public and government support for space exploration dwindled. But these days, governments are no longer the sole funders and developers of ambitious space initiatives. In recent years a commercial space industry has blossomed, making the sector far more accessible to private enterprise and enabling the proliferation of entrepreneurial space companies around the planet.

At EVONA our sole focus is space sector recruiting in this new and rapidly advancing era of commercial space development.

But our mission isn’t simply to match great candidates with great job opportunities.

It can’t be. Because development within the space sector has the potential to radically alter the course of humanity as we navigate through the 21st century and beyond.

In this industry, we’re not just creating jobs. We’re creating our future.

Not All Recruiting is Equal

No matter the industry, the basic goals of recruiting are the same. A recruiter is fundamentally a match-maker; someone who helps organizations with open positions find candidates who fit the part. The goal is to make the match in a way that saves time, money, and effort for employers and is a positive experience for candidates.

Good recruiters are good match-makers. It takes experience, knowledge, skill and hard work to be consistently successful at identifying talented candidates and pairing them with the right opportunities, in the right fields, with the right employers.

This is one obvious way in which not all recruiting is equal. Not all recruiters are equal in experience, knowledge, skill, and dedication. Some recruiters, and recruiting companies are just better than others at the fundamental aspects of the job.

But recruiting can differ in another important respect.

Not all industries have an equal impact on human welfare. Not all sectors have an equal role to play in determining the opportunities and outcomes for current and future generations. Not all markets are equal in the degree to which they can offer solutions to pressing social and environmental concerns.

Consider the differences between:

  1. recruiting for a professional sports team;
  2. recruiting for a legal or finance firm;
  3. recruiting for the military in a time of war; and
  4. recruiting for the health industry in a time of global pandemic.

Even if every recruiter is an equally skilled and effective match-maker, there can be enormous differences in the significance and potential impact of one’s recruiting activities, depending on the industry and the context.

If we had to rank the relative importance of these recruiting activities, we’ll rightly pick (3) and (4) over (1) and (2).

The Space Sector Will Shape Our Future

Here’s the question: Is recruiting for the space sector in the 21st century more like sourcing white-collar employees for a law firm, or triage nurses for a stricken CDC outpost?

It may be easy for some to discount the very real implications of the work currently being done at space companies around the globe. Some may see the space industry as devoid of tangible value for the average citizen—or perhaps, as just a bunch of high-minded science-types high-fiving each other. However, at EVONA we believe that the technological developments that are taking place now have the potential to fundamentally reshape how we live and interact, and will influence what future possibilities are open to us as a species.

It is for this reason that we view space sector recruiting as more meaningful, more impactful, and more important than many other commonplace industries.

We all love our sports teams and our lawyers. But developments within the space sector and its associated technologies will have a deep and lasting influence on human society and our ability to cope with rapid social and environmental changes. This is an important difference.

We Are EVONA

Today, we are witnessing the beginning of a new and exciting era of space sector development. As dedicated space recruiters, we are determined to guide the emerging entrepreneurial space workforce to their ultimate destination: companies and positions wherein individuals can make the most impactful contributions for the betterment of humankind.

At EVONA, we aim for excellence in our fundamental role as space sector match-makers. But we also aim for excellence in the space sector itself, to help it grow, thrive, and ultimately realize its potential as a shaper of positive futures for humanity.

Our discussion on space sector recruiting continues in
