Mechanical Engineer
Mechanical Engineer
Northern Virginia (Washington DC area) | Onsite, 4 days a week | Full time, permanent
The company
A fast-growing, venture-backed defense technology company. Its hardware sits on military ground vehicles and fighter aircraft, capturing data that keeps those fleets secure and mission ready. Revenue has tripled this year and the hardware team is growing to match.
The role
You’ll be the second mechanical engineer on a small hardware team, working alongside electrical engineers and production. You’ll own the mechanical side of rugged electronics from first concept through to production and onto the platform. There’s no handing off and no waiting on another department. What you design goes into the field.
What you’ll do
- Design rugged chassis and electronic enclosure assemblies for harsh military environments
- Run your own thermal and structural analysis to prove designs out
- Produce production drawings with GD&T, and own BOMs and design revisions with suppliers
- Prototype, test and validate against shock, vibration, thermal and environmental requirements
- Design installation kits, brackets and cable routing for vehicle and aircraft integration
- Travel to customer sites roughly once every month or two for fit checks and integration testing
What you’ll bring
- 3 to 10 years in mechanical design of rugged electronic enclosures, chassis or electronics packaging
- Hands-on thermal analysis and structural analysis/FEA, done by you rather than handed off
- Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred, but NX, Creo or CATIA users are welcome)
- Hands-on prototyping, assembly and testing experience
- Exposure to MIL-STD-810 and/or DO-160 environments
- Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or similar
- US citizen, able to obtain a security clearance (no active clearance needed; sponsorship available)
Nice to have
- Defense or aerospace platform integration experience
- Startup or small-team background where you’ve owned a design end to end
Why this one
- Real ownership on a team of two, not one engineer among hundreds at a prime
- Hardware on fighter jets and Army vehicles, with a roadmap moving into high-speed inline systems
- Competitive base/bonus + equity
- Four days onsite, with flexibility for heads-down design work
- Low travel compared with most field-facing roles
