Electrical Engineer
Electrical Engineer, Rugged Defense Hardware
Arlington, VA (on-site 4 days a week) | Full time | Competitive base + equity
The company
A fast-growing, venture-backed defense tech company building the data and cybersecurity platform for military ground vehicles and aircraft. Their hardware sits on the platform’s data buses, capturing the telemetry that drives cyber protection, predictive maintenance and readiness. Revenue has grown 3x this year, and the roadmap is moving from passively monitoring those buses to an inline hardware firewall with hard latency constraints, built on high-speed FPGA architecture.
The role
You’ll be the fourth electrical engineer on a small hardware team, owning boards end to end: schematic, layout, bring-up, test and production. You won’t hand a layout to someone else or wait on another team, and your design ends up on real platforms in the field.
What you’ll do
- Design power electronics, especially DC-DC conversion, alongside high-speed digital boards interfacing with FPGAs, DDR and high-speed Ethernet
- Run your own schematic capture and multi-layer layout in Altium
- Bring up boards, write test plans and troubleshoot production directly with board vendors
- Design and qualify hardware to military standards (MIL-STD-810, 461, 704, 1275, DO-160)
- Work closely with firmware, embedded and mechanical engineers
- Travel roughly once every month or two for design reviews, integration testing and platform fit checks
What you’ll bring
- 3 to 10 years in hardware design
- Power electronics depth, and the willingness to cover digital design as well
- A record of laying out your own boards, ideally in Altium
- Hands-on lab skills with scopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers and thermal chambers
- Aerospace, defense or military space experience is a strong plus
- Comfortable working with minimal hand-holding
- US citizen, eligible for a US Government security clearance (sponsorship available, no active clearance needed)
Why join
- A wide scope you won’t get at a large prime: power, digital and production all in one seat
- Equity in a company growing fast on real defense contracts
- A small team where ownership is expected
