Staff Mechanical Engineer – Spacecraft
Location: Westminster, Colorado
Working Pattern: Full-time | On-site
Industry: Space / Aerospace
Discipline: Mechanical Engineering
EVONA is partnering with a rapidly growing space technology company developing advanced communications hardware and spacecraft systems for next-generation missions.
We’re looking for an experienced Staff Mechanical Engineer to take technical ownership of mechanical systems across spacecraft development, while leading and mentoring a small team of engineers.
This is a highly hands-on technical leadership position for someone who has taken spacecraft hardware from initial concept through design, manufacturing, integration, environmental qualification and ultimately flight.
The Role
You’ll act as a key mechanical authority within the spacecraft engineering team, leading the development of spacecraft structures, mechanisms and mechanical interfaces.
Your responsibilities will include:
-
Lead mechanical development of spacecraft, subsystems and interfaces.
-
Own mechanical designs from concept through manufacturing, AI&T, qualification and flight.
-
Lead and mentor a small team of mechanical engineers.
-
Develop spacecraft structures, mechanisms, electronics packaging and mechanical interfaces.
-
Perform architectural trade studies and support requirements development.
-
Review structural and thermal analysis to ensure designs meet mission requirements.
-
Work closely with GNC, EPS, CDH, Payload, RF, Systems and AI&T teams.
-
Support spacecraft assembly, integration and environmental testing.
-
Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues identified during testing.
-
Present designs and technical findings during engineering and customer reviews.
-
Contribute to technical proposals and future spacecraft architectures.
What We’re Looking For
-
BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.
-
9+ years of relevant spacecraft mechanical engineering experience.
-
Significant experience with satellite structures and mechanisms.
-
5+ years leading technical teams or mentoring engineers.
-
Contributions to multiple flight missions.
-
Ownership of at least one complete spacecraft-level mechanical development cycle.
-
Strong understanding of mechanics of materials, structural design and engineering fundamentals.
-
Hands-on spacecraft assembly, integration and test (AI&T) experience.
-
Environmental testing experience including vibration, shock and TVAC.
-
Experience with spacecraft primary and secondary structures.
-
Strong knowledge of GD&T, CNC manufacturing and mechanical drawings.
-
Experience designing for manufacturing, assembly, test, reliability and cost.
-
Experience with composite sandwich panels and spacecraft structural materials.
-
Experience with professional CAD/FEA tools such as SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS or Nastran.
-
Ability to review and challenge structural and thermal analysis.
-
Strong communication skills with experience presenting technical information to senior stakeholders.
Nice to Have
-
Experience across LEO, GEO and beyond.
-
Experience with spacecraft ranging from CubeSats/SmallSats through larger satellite platforms.
-
Experience across multiple spacecraft structural or mechanical architectures.
-
Python or other scripting experience.
-
Previous experience recovering from structural or mechanism failures during environmental testing.
Why Apply?
This is an opportunity to take genuine technical ownership of flight hardware and help shape the mechanical architecture of next-generation spacecraft.
You’ll work across the complete spacecraft lifecycle, collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams and have a direct impact on hardware that will ultimately operate in orbit.
Please note: This position is on-site in Westminster, Colorado.
Due to U.S. space technology export-control requirements, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, conditional resident, asylee or refugee, or otherwise eligible to obtain the required U.S. government authorization.
