Senior Draftsman / Turbomachinery Specialist

Senior Turbomachinery Designer (CAD / Drafting)

About the Opportunity

We're seeking an experienced Turbomachinery Designer to take ownership of the detailed design definition for high-performance rotating machinery. This is a specialist technical role suited to someone who has built their career producing precision CAD models, manufacturing drawings, GD&T schemes, and tolerance stack-ups for aerospace propulsion or other advanced rotating equipment.

This is not a mechanical engineering or management position. We're looking for a career designer who enjoys solving complex design-for-manufacture challenges and delivering production-ready hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings for turbomachinery components and assemblies.

  • Develop production-ready drawing packages including GD&T, datum schemes, fits, clearances and functional tolerancing.

  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure rotating assemblies meet performance and manufacturing requirements.

  • Translate engineering concepts into manufacturable hardware while maintaining design intent.

  • Work closely with manufacturing, suppliers, quality and engineering teams throughout the product development cycle.

  • Support drawing releases, engineering changes and configuration control.

  • Drive continuous improvements in manufacturability, drawing quality and drafting standards.

  • Provide technical input on machining methods, inspection requirements and assembly considerations.

Required Experience

  • 15+ years of professional experience in mechanical drafting or detailed design.

  • Significant experience designing turbomachinery or other complex rotating mechanical systems.

  • Extensive experience creating manufacturing drawings for precision mechanical hardware.

  • Expert knowledge of GD&T, functional tolerancing and tolerance stack-up analysis.

  • Strong understanding of precision machining, manufacturing processes and design for manufacture.

  • Advanced CAD experience using Siemens NX, CATIA or similar high-end CAD platforms.

  • Experience working within aerospace, propulsion, energy or other high-performance engineering environments.

Ideal Backgrounds

Candidates are likely to come from industries such as:

  • Rocket propulsion

  • Aircraft engines

  • Helicopter engines

  • Gas turbines

  • Industrial turbomachinery

  • Aerospace gearboxes

  • High-performance rotating equipment

  • Formula One powertrain design

Preferred Skills

  • Siemens NX or CATIA

  • GD&T and functional dimensioning

  • Tolerance stack-up analysis

  • Precision rotating assemblies

  • Aerospace manufacturing standards

  • Design for Manufacture (DfM)

  • Configuration management and engineering release processes

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate has spent the majority of their career focused on detailed CAD design and drafting within turbomachinery or closely related rotating equipment. They are highly proficient in producing manufacturing-ready drawings, understand the realities of precision machining and assembly, and enjoy remaining hands-on in a deeply technical role.

We're looking for a specialist who wants to continue building world-class hardware rather than moving into engineering management.
