Medium Voltage Electrical Engineer

Medium Voltage Electrical Engineer
Denver, CO

Our client are an exciting fast paced Aerospace client looking for an experienced Medium Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead the design and commissioning of a large-scale industrial power generation system, taking ownership of the medium-voltage electrical infrastructure from concept through commissioning.

This is an opportunity to design a standalone 13.8kV power system for a high-power industrial application where reliability, protection, and performance are critical. You'll be responsible for defining how the system generates, distributes, protects, and controls electrical power in both islanded and grid-connected operating modes.

Unlike conventional projects that rely on existing utility infrastructure, this role involves developing the electrical system architecture from first principles, solving complex challenges around voltage regulation, protection, synchronization, transient performance, and system resilience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Define the medium-voltage electrical architecture, single-line diagrams, protection philosophy, and operating concepts.
  • Specify and support procurement of switchgear, generator circuit breakers, transformers, and other long-lead electrical equipment.
  • Develop protection coordination studies, relay settings, fault studies, and detailed electrical design documentation.
  • Lead commissioning activities including first energization, relay testing, synchronization, load acceptance, and step-load testing.
  • Support factory and field testing to validate electrical system performance.

Key Areas of Ownership

  • Medium-voltage generation, distribution, and protection systems.
  • Generator electrical integration, excitation, and voltage regulation.
  • Medium-voltage switchgear and circuit breaker systems.
  • Protective relaying including differential, overcurrent, ground fault, voltage, and frequency protection.
  • Protection coordination and fault current analysis.
  • Islanded power system operation, synchronization, and frequency control.
  • CT/PT specification, metering, and sensing infrastructure.
  • Load bank integration and transient performance testing.
  • Neutral grounding strategy and ground fault detection.
  • Arc flash studies, electrical safety, and interlock systems.

Ideal Background:

  • Extensive experience with medium-voltage electrical systems in industrial, power generation, energy, or heavy engineering environments.
  • Strong knowledge of switchgear, protective relays, grounding systems, and generator integration.
  • Experience with generator excitation, automatic voltage regulators (AVRs), synchronization, and transient system behaviour.
  • Expertise in protection coordination studies, relay selection, and commissioning.
  • Ability to produce and review electrical drawings including single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams including mechanical, controls, and instrumentation engineers.
